RIPOSTE is the 2010 debut album of the instrument-building, genre defying duo of Buke and Gass, whose music is loud yet folky, polyrhythmic yet melodic. Currently celebrating the recent release of their third album SCHOLARS, the band is revisiting the record that started it all — winning them appearances on NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series, raves from Pitchfork, and tours with The National and Lou Reed. This edition is on orange vinyl and strictly limited to a 400 copy pressing worldwide. Brooklyn-based Buke & Gass (pronounced Byook and Gace) are Arone Dyer on the "buke" (a six-string baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the "gass" (a guitar-bass hybrid). Both members also mobilize a small army of foot percussion, filtering the result through various pedals, amplifiers and homemade inventions while Arone's supermelodic vocal lines weave through the beautiful yet unwieldy musical matter. It's a surprisingly complex sound for two people and all the invention and musical multi-tasking makes for live shows that are visually unexpected and sonically explosive Stereogum wrote of their debut album: "They both handle all sorts of foot percussion. The sounds are then filtered and processed, etc. It's compelling watching them kick and strum...but it was Arone Dyer's waling, uplifting, melodic voice that left the biggest impression on me. You hear Beth Ditto for a second (one who races/fixes bikes and builds her own instruments, doesn't hang out at fashion shows), Kathleen Hannah in those Bikini Kill days, Throwing Muses, something else, etc., an overall joy."
