Buck is now confident enough to not always hide his voice underneath the buzz of an amplifier and to hand his best piece of writing, the autobiographical \"Southerner,\" over to Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers to recite, while giving Corin Tucker the spotlight for the spooky \"Drown with Me.\" Buck could've done \"Southerner\" but he knows he doesn't have the vocal chops for \"Drown with Me\" and, better still, he doesn't much care, as he's having a great time growling about \"Monkey Mask\" and bitching about how he's \"Gotta Get Outta the House.\" These last two could've fit onto 2012's Peter Buck but the full-bodied '60s Boyce \u0026amp; Hart pop of \"West of Sunset\" and full-flowered \"Fall on My Own Sword\" are the greatest signals of how Buck is expanding his palette without ever leaving his 1985 home base. And who can blame him for living in a past refracted through the past? The '80s were good to him. Shelton's second album for Daptone, Cold World, mixes elements of traditional gospel with '60s-influenced soul, and while there's less of a churchy feel to this album than 2009's What Have You Done, My Brother?, it certainly fits in with the mindset of acts like Curtis Mayfield and the Staple Singers, who weren't afraid to add some Christian-leaning commentary to their music. \"Sinner,\" \"Heaven Is Mine,\" \"Humble Me,\" and the title track all have the slinky feel of vintage soul (Shelton's longtime musical director Cliff Driver and Daptone chief Gabriel Roth, the latter of whom wrote six of the album's 12 numbers, have helped give this music a groove that's authentic yet unforced), while Shelton's voice -- compassionate and muscular, with just a hint of sass -- has both the power and the emotional heft to bring these tunes to life, not so much preaching as offering her audience advice about life lessons she learned the hard way. Back in the day, they rented out a huge warehouse in Las Vegas, and Vegas certainly wasn't a hotbed for heavy metal by any stretch of the imagination, but they would fill up that warehouse (which mainly served as their practice space) with around 200 people at a time and have these massive heavy metal parties. Eventually, they recorded only one album, The Avatar, which was self-released on vinyl as a private pressing, and was utilized more as a sales pitch to potential record labels than anything else. But alas, a label deal never came, and ANGEL OF MERCY faded into obscurity.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHowever, what they left behind with the lone monument of The Avatar is astounding to behold, still, some 30 years after its ill-fated release. A true document of true epic metal without aiming to be epic metal in the first place, The Avatar is a mesmerizing blend of magick and high drama, of mysticism and glory, sorrow and triumph, and all unselfconsciously so. ANGEL OF MERCY's main influences were KISS, Rush, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin. Strangely enough, they didn't hear Iron Maiden until after all the songs comprising The Avatar were written, so somehow, the band had crafted this highly melodic yet highly mysterious sound without hearing one of the form's most foundational bands. Similarly, if we're speaking strictly of US metal, The Avatar could be compared to early Manilla Road and demo-era Anvil Chorus, even though ANGEL OF MERCY were unaware of either band at the time.
