His tremulous basslines are on nine of the album's 18 tracks, and his spaced-out, quasi-oracular vocals poke through on occasion, such as on an 80-second track that is titled after a natural psychedelic compound and references the title of Ellison's 2010 EP. True to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca class=\"name-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/flying-lotus-mn0000717419\"\u003eFlying Lotus\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e form, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca class=\"name-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/bruner-mn0002424073\"\u003eBruner\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's voice, as well as those of everyone else, is made to sound phantasmal rather than spotlit. While much of the material on Ellison's previous three albums came across like brief and isolated ideas with an impact unaffected by the shuffle function, the shorter pieces here act more like true connectors or proper set-ups\/interludes. The 12 minutes from \"See Thru to U\" through \"Only if You Wanna\" make for the album's least divisible section. It begins with lithe and slightly unsettling pattering and closes with a futuristic, organic-synthetic jazz trio piece. Somewhere in the middle, there's \"The Nightcaller,\" the closest the album gets to dancefloor funk like \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca class=\"album-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/cosmogramma-mw0001965699\"\u003eCosmogramma\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e's \"Do the Astral Plane\" -- that is, until the last minute, when the gliding\/chugging beat stammers and switches to a delirious strut. For all the elegiac and turbulent moments, several tracks, including the majestically wistful \"Getting There\" and the cascading \"Until the Colours Come,\" are gorgeously starry and even lullaby-like, laced with ear-perking flourishes. Krall does not limit herself to the songbook of Gilbert O'Sullivan, Jim Croce, the Carpenters, Elton John, and the Eagles, choosing to expand her definition of soft rock to include a previously unrecorded Paul McCartney song called \"If I Take You Home Tonight\" (a leftover from his standards album Kisses on the Bottom), Bob Dylan's \"Wallflower,\" Randy Newman's \"Feels Like Home,\" and Neil Finn's \"Don't Dream It's Over,\" a song from 1986 that has been covered frequently in the three decades since. \"Don't Dream It's Over\" slides into this collection easily, as it's as malleable and timeless as \"California Dreamin',\" \"Superstar,\" \"Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word,\" or \"Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels),\" songs that are identified with specific artists but are often covered successfully. Krall's renditions rank among those successes because she's understated, never fussing with the melodies but allowing her arrangements to slink by in a deliberate blend of sparseness and sophistication. It's an aesthetic that helps transform the Eagles' \"I Can't Tell You Why\" and 10cc's \"I'm Not in Love,\" singles that are as successful as much for their production as their song, into elegant torch songs, yet it doesn't do much for Newman's pedestrian \"Feels Like Home,\" nor does it lend itself to the loping country of \"Wallflower,\" which may provide the name for this album but feels like an uninvited guest among these majestically melodic middle-of-the-road standards. Instead, the focus is always on Jones' voice and songs, which are once again all originals, sometimes composed in conjunction with collaborators including her longtime colleagues Jesse Harris, Ryan Adams, and Will Sheff of Okkervil River. In addition to King's pedigree, the latter two co-writers suggest a slight indie bent to Jones' direction, which isn't an inaccurate impression -- there's certainly a late-night N.Y.C. vibe to these songs -- but it's easy to overstate the artiness of The Fall, especially when compared to Not Too Late, which wore its ragged ambitions proudly.
