For all three musicians, it was the first ensemble\u003cbr\u003erecording session they’d done in-person since the pandemic\u003cbr\u003elocked the world down just seven months prior. Some choice\u003cbr\u003emoments from these sessions made it onto Villarreal’s critically-\u003cbr\u003eacclaimed 2022 album Panamá 77, but most of the music\u003cbr\u003eremained unreleased.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLados B is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music\u003cbr\u003emade by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days\u003cbr\u003ein 2020. Villarreal is heard leading the group through various\u003cbr\u003erhythmic modes and structures for improvisation – flow as\u003cbr\u003einformed by the Latin funk of Fania Records as it is by the\u003cbr\u003eotherworldly humanity trance of Brain Records – while Parker\u003cbr\u003eand Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing free\u003cbr\u003etogether (as heard on their ETA IVtet LPs) to build harmonic\u003cbr\u003ebuoys for their spontaneous melodicism.
