One of the names inextricably linked with the music from the southern juke joints is the fabulous Otis Hicks, aka Lightnin' Slim (1913-1974), a mainstay of "swamp blues" (that distinctive down-home butecholaden- electric blues from Louisiana). He possessed one of the truly great blues voices, which was indolent, unadorned and unaffected. Slim built his style on his grainy but expressive singing and rudimentary guitar work.
