Mike James Kirkland & Monophonics - The Business LP NEW
Ubiquity Recordings
Following the 2025 release of lead single "Glowin'," Mike James Kirkland returns with his long-awaited full-length album, The Business. Backed by Monophonics, Kirkland delivers a rich, horn-driven collection that seamlessly blends upbeat soul with heartfelt ballads, reaffirming his place as one of the genre's enduring voices.
The album opens with the energetic "Ready Or Not," where Kirkland confidently declares, "Baby, I am ready," setting the tone for a triumphant comeback. Producer Kelly Finnigan channels the lush sophistication of Philly soul on "Where Did We Go Wrong," layering horns, flute, French horn, and sitar beneath Kirkland's reflection on love in turmoil. Finnigan also arranges the romantic "Leading Lady," while joining Kirkland on background vocals for the tender "Remembering Our Love."
The midtempo title track “The Business” turns its attention to social issues, pairing flowing strings with lyrics addressing systemic injustice and police oppression. In contrast, "Joyriding" captures the carefree spirit of summer with an uplifting groove that ranks among the album's highlights.
Well-received single "Glowin'," closes the album. Inspired by The Rationals' 1969 version of the Dr. John composition, the song reflects Kirkland's enduring message of seeking spiritual balance and happiness over material success.
Written and recorded between late 2021 and mid-2022 with contributions from Jimmy James (Parlor Greens) and Lou King (Ironsides), The Business pairs Kirkland's timeless vocals with the Monophonics' lush musicianship, marking a welcome return for the legendary soul singer.
